State Passenger Rail Group to Meet in Boone

(Boone, Iowa)--The Iowa Association of Railroad Passengers (IARP) will
meet at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, October 26, 2003, at the Golden Corral Family
Steakhouse, 1312 South Story Street, Boone.
An informal lunch will follow at the restaurant beginning at about 11:00 a.m.
The IARP fall meeting will include updates on the future of Amtrak's long
distance trains and Iowa's participation in a Midwest Regional Rail System.
IARP President Pat Hendricks said, "I was just in Washington, D.C., and
received a status report from Amtrak President and CEO David Gunn. We've
got to turn up the political pressure for far more federal and state
support of passenger rail service."
Following the meeting and lunch, members may make on-their-own
arrangements to ride the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone. Optional
train rides are at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The meeting is open to the public. Attendees will be asked for a $3 per
person meeting fee to cover expenses.
Changes to the articles of incorporation and bylaws will also be
considered at the meeting.
Hendricks said the Iowa Association of Railroad Passengers is a state-wide
non-profit group that supports rail service, both passenger and freight.
Hendricks also says the group meets at various locations throughout the
state. Previous recent meeting sites have included Council Bluffs, Mount
Pleasant, Des Moines, Osceola and Dubuque.
The organization is affiliated with the National Association of Railroad
Passengers in Washington, D.C.
